There are 26 thousand inhabitants and 2,400 companies in South Iceland. The region consists of 15 municipalities and reaches over XXX square kilometers. The area reaches from the edge of the capital area, Reykjavik, all the way to the east part of Iceland, Höfn. The area reaches up to the north to the most visited areas in Iceland Gullfoss and Geysir and east towards the largest glacier in Europe a.k.a. Vatnajökull. The area includes two national parks that are 13,200 square kilometers. Þingvellir, with the oldest parliament in the world and one of the most popular tourist places in Iceland, and Vatnajökull National Park that is centered around the glacier.

The area is rich in nature, culture and history. Agriculture, horticulture, seafood and energy are the most common industries along with tourism. South Iceland is in fact the most visited region in Iceland both by foreigners and Icelanders themselves, all year around. Enormous diversity of landscape in the region attract the tourists. Mountains, glaciers, black beaches and volcanoes to name a few. Here people can among others enjoy hiking, watersports, hike up glaciers or go on snowmobiles, ride ATVs or kayak along waters and rivers. In South Iceland you will also find folk museums, volcano and lava museums, geothermal museum and historical museums of various kinds.
