The tourist industry in South Iceland has increased rapidly over the last couple of years. This service industry has become one of the key sectors and more companies are joining in. Among them are activity companies, restaurants, accommodations and various other service and product companies. Apart from the capital area most nights are spent in South Iceland. According to a study by far the greatest number of people visit South Iceland when visiting Iceland or about 60%. South Iceland scores also the highest in regards to what part tourists mostly like in Iceland and scores even higher than the capital, Reykjavik.
Even though there are many tourist companies in South Iceland there is still plenty of space for more. Often there is a lack of accommodation in the area and there is space for more restaurants and activities. Hence there are many opportunities for tourist companies and innovation companies in relation to tourism.
There is a road from Keflavik Airport that leads you directly to South Iceland and by driving that route visitors can skip Reykjavik. By focusing more on that route more areas in the south and south-east can be reached all year around.
