Business is thriving in South Iceland. Agriculture plays an important role as well as the fishing industry though there are only three fishing harbours in South Iceland; Vestmannaeyjar, Þorlákshöfn and Höfn. Other key industries are the energy industry, horticulture and tourism. 

There are numerous opportunities in South Iceland for companies for example in agriculture, innovation and tourism. In South Iceland there are various villages and towns that companies can grow their business in or they can choose to open their business in more remote areas with a different focus. Hence, it can be easy to find or build apartments for employees if needed.    

It can be profitable to invest in the tourist industry in South Iceland as most tourists who visit Iceland take a trip to the South during their stay. Apart from Reykjavik and surroundings most nights are spent in South Iceland the whole year around or about 20%. In a survey conducted by the Icelandic Tourist Board in 2017/2018 most tourists or about 60% will travel to South Iceland during their stay in Iceland. In addition the tourists were most satisfied with South Iceland and that area scored the highest in the survey, even higher than the capital area and Reykjavik.

If 60% of all tourists in Iceland visit South Iceland, which makes 1.4 million tourists per year and the number is always increasing.
